Authentic Relationships
In class today, we used the word "tenuous" to describe the dashed lines, but that word doesn't satisfy the difference between relationships in Loving. Just because people know each other or share experiences, doesn't mean that they connect on an emotional or mental level. How does this play into our discussion of authenticity? Are there artificial relationships just like there can be artificial language? For example, we said that we wanted Mrs. Jack to have a relationship to her daughters, but we knew that was as false as Daisy and Pammy's relationship in The Great Gatsby. Why does her non-presence make the relationship inauthentic? Oh gosh, now I'm getting into physicality. Must stop.
