I think it’s pretty clear (unless something comes up
that I haven’t read yet) that Ella and Anna have a lot in common. They both
have a child (Anna – Janet, Ella – Michael) (just in case the number of
characters wasn’t confusing enough, now some of them have the same name), they
both used to live with friends their closest friends and they both end up
“free” from the men they were with. However, Ella is clearly Anna’s invention,
being the result of Anna getting as close to writing a diary without actually doing
so, a sort-of semi-memoir. I like the issue that Tommy brings up on page 253 –
“Why do you have four notebooks?” It makes sense for Anna to write about her
past, but I think we should discuss why, when talking about her detailed
love-life, she feels the need to write from a pseudonym?
PS. From now on, semi-memoir’s will forever be known
as semi-memi’s.
